Communication on Set: The Skill Nobody Puts on a Resume Every department on a set runs on information moving fast and cleanly. A camera move nobody relayed, a lunch push that never made it to background holding, a van that left without the actor — those aren't equipment failures. They're communication failures, and they cost money. Here's what new crew often misunderstand: set communication isn't casual conversation with a radio attached. It's a system. Channel 1 is production. Every department has its own channel and stays there so 1 stays clear. When you key up, you're interrupting everyone listening — so you have your sentence ready before you press the button, not while you're holding it. The language exists for a reason. "Copy" means received and understood. "Stand by" means I heard you and can't respond yet. "20" means location. "Flying in" means it's on its way. These aren't affectations. They're compressed, unambiguous, and they survive a noisy stage. When an AD calls "rolling," you echo it. When they call "checking the gate," you echo it. The echo is how the message travels 300 feet through a crowded set without anyone shouting. Then there's the part people learn the hard way: chain of command. You talk to your department head. Your department head talks across. A PA who walks up to the director with a question has bypassed four people and put their own key in an awkward position. It reads as inexperience even when the question is good. Five things you can do starting on your next call time:
Good communicators get called back. That's the whole equation. That's what this community is for — questions, career goals, whatever's on your mind. We're always in your corner. All the Best, Liv Today's New JobsThere are 156 jobs open on the US board this morning, and 34 of them arrived since yesterday — the newest ones have barely been seen, so be among the first names in. Recommended Job of the DayDirectors' Assistant is today's pick. It's with an animation studio in Los Angeles working on both features and series, supporting two Directors: diary, meetings, creative reviews, screenings and recording sessions, notes, scripts and reference material, travel and expenses, and being the link between the Directors and everyone else on the production. It suits someone unusually organised who wants to see how animation actually gets made from the inside. Before you send it, learn how an animation pipeline is structured and show you understand the rhythm of reviews and recording. Apply today — the shortlist takes shape while applications are still coming in.

Upcoming Virtual Workshops Thu 22 Oct, 7:00pm EDTPost Production: The Other Side of CUT! Free for members
Tom Flores walks through what actually happens once the camera stops rolling — how footage moves from set to edit, who touches it along the way, and where a new person realistically fits in. You'll understand how the post chain is staffed, what the entry-level jobs really involve day to day, and why the hours get long at the back end of a schedule when everyone else has wrapped and post is still delivering. Useful if you're weighing up post as a career, or if you've been applying to edit and VFX roles without a clear picture of how the department runs. Book your place |
