Your Film Career Doesn’t Have to Start on Set
Join us tomorrow for the October Virtual Workshop -- “Post Production: The Other Side of ‘Cut’” with Tom Flores, who went from Post PA to Producer. We are opening this up to all members, not just Pro Members this month! Register here if you'd like to attend!
“How do I get on set?”
We get asked this all the time, and we understand why. Set is exciting. You’re in the middle of it, watching a project come to life.
But a huge amount of filmmaking happens nowhere near a set. And that’s where a lot of you will end up building a career.
The bigger picture
Production offices, editorial, post facilities, development, distribution. All of them take a project from idea to audience, and all of them hire entry level.
So be honest with yourself about where you fit. What do you actually enjoy doing all day? Not what sounds coolest at a party.
You don’t need the full answer yet. You do need to look around.
Post production is worth a look
Post is editors, sound, color, VFX and delivery. It’s also the people running schedules, tracking versions, chasing notes and keeping all of it moving.
If you’re the organized one who never loses a file, post production management is probably your lane. If it’s the storytelling and the tech, look at editorial.
A Post PA job puts you in the room with those teams. The duties vary a lot between companies, so read the description properly and ask what the job really involves day to day.
One thing to do this week
Pick a department that isn’t set. Go through the entry-level listings on the MFJF job board, read what they’re actually asking for, and note what you already have and what you don’t. Then apply to the ones you can do, and bring the rest as questions to Thursday’s workshop.
Your first job might point you somewhere you never planned on going. That’s usually how it goes.
My hot take? Look into Post Production! It's always going to be there, and it's the final step in the filmmaking process, which is always exciting to me.
If you’d like to discuss these opportunities or your broader career goals, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Supporting you is what we’re here for.
